Journalism Trends and Best Practices for the Sixth Time in Prague

29. March 2021

The Bakala Foundation opens the 6th Journey program, which will offer a 10-day program with world journalist aces such as Adam Entous, Pulitzer Prize winner and investigative journalist for The New Yorker. Other renowned professionals from CNN, The Washington Post, Reuters, Bloomberg, and AP will also come to Prague to share their professional experience. Representatives of the Czech media will also be present. The popular journalistic summer school nurtures students of journalism and related fields in the Czech Republic and abroad.

Michaela and Zdenek Bakala, founders and donors of the Bakala Foundation, commented on their commitment to the program, saying: “At a time of growing pressure on journalists and their independent journalism, it is important to support future journalists, and encourage their freedom and professionalism.”

Adam Entous, Pulitzer Prize winner and The New Yorker investigative journalist, is coming to Prague to become one of the Journey tutors.

The Journey Program is a unique journalistic boot-camp-styled program. Its participants attend lectures and workshops on journalistic ethics, working with resources, investigative journalism, photojournalism, and more, over the course of ten days. The program includes modern trends in journalistic work, fieldwork exams, simulated work in the newsroom, and team reporting. A great added value for students is the opportunity to get immediate feedback from the best. Guests of the program also offer their professional experience and best practices.

In 2019, representatives from ten countries of the world and the Czech Republic came to Prague to participate in the Journey international program: Slovakia, Bulgaria, Hungary, Poland, Romania, Ukraine, Bosnia and Herzegovina, Serbia, Great Britain, and the USA. The pandemic and travel restrictions made it necessary to cancel the 2020 Journey Program. “This year, we are ready to do anything to make Journey happen,” says Václav Pecha, director of the Bakala Foundation. “We aim to present journalism to the young talent from all angles and by experts in the industry. We hope it will make it easier for them to later decide what career direction they would like to take.”

The summer school is intended for students of journalism and related fields not only in the Czech Republic. There are students from Central and Eastern Europe, Great Britain and USA coming for the international Journey program.

Registration for the Journey program closes on April 30th, 2021. Successful candidates will receive a scholarship covering the course fees and all costs associated with their travel and stay in Prague.
